Scottish Championship Stage One Squadded - 20 shots at 50 metres, 20 shots at 100 yards. The qualifying stage of the Scottish Championship for the Earl Haig Memorial Trophy on Sunday afternoon produced surprises in both elimination groups. The format of the championship is that the first 10 and equal from each group goes forward to the final on Friday afternoon. Concurrent with the championship is a section for B, C and D class shooters competing for the Scottish Police RA Trophy, with the leading 4 and equal 'inexpert' shooters going forward to their own B C & D final, which is shot at the same time and over the same course of fire as the main final. The surprise this year is that, of the 23 main finalists, 11 are from B C & D class, with ALL the 'inexperts' qualifying for the Championship final. The leading qualifier in Squad 1 was Bill Copland, Banff & Macduff, with 377x400, with George Mortimer in second place leading the B C & D qualifiers on 375x400. In squad 2, Jim Cole-Hamilton, of Bon Accord RC and a former Scotland A squad and Commonwealth Games Team member, produced the top qualifying score of 379x400, with Susan Jackson, Watsonians and a current member of the Scotland Commonwealth Games squad, qualifying second with 373x400. The Earl Haig championship also includes a concurrent junior (under 21) section for the Adam Gordon Quaich and the leading junior in the first stage was Robin Honhold, George Watson's College, in 4th place in squad 2, on 370x400, with club mates Nicola Sammels and Oliver Barron also qualifying in 8th and 9th places in squad 2. All 23 shooters take to the range again on Friday at 2pm for the final which is the concluding event of the Championship meeting.
